THE MYTH OF STANTORINI
Historically known as ‘“Kallisti”, the most beautiful one, “Strongyle”, the circular one and “Thera”, the island finally became known around the world with the name Santorini, deriving from the old cathedral Santa Irini in the village of Perissa. The various largest volcanic eruptions create the site of Santorini in the last thousands of years and may have caused the destroy of the Minoan civilization in Crete due to tidal waves. The island is also home to one of the most famous archaeological sites of the ancient Greek world, the Bronze Age site of Akrotiri, which was covered in pumice and volcanic ash with the eruption of c. 1650-1550 BC, thereby preserving with unique freshness the coloured frescoes which are amongst the best known images of ancient Greek art. Excavations in Akrotiri brought up light a coastal city with culture relative to the Minoan enhanced local Cycladic figures. Another popular theory holds that the Santorini eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis. So, Santorini is a worth exploring island with magnificent beauties.
